Council reveals contribution to University of New England campus during funding announcement

A Tamworth campus for the University of New England (UNE) is one step closer following an announcement bringing together three agencies this morning to make this goal for the Tamworth region a reality.

Mayor Russell Webb announced that Council will be contributing the Old Velodrome site on Peel Street, Tamworth to the project, which is a key outcome of the Blueprint 100 strategy. This announcement is a huge win for the Tamworth region, providing educational diversity and opportunities for the region’s future generations.

Council's contribution is alongside a commitment of $26.6 million from the NSW Government's Growing Local Economies fund, and $20 million from UNE as announced by Member for Tamworth, Kevin Anderson MP and UNE's Vice-Chancellor and CEO Brigid Heywood.

Tamworth Region Mayor Russell Webb said this was an exciting new milestone for Tamworth.

“Today marks an exciting milestone in a key project for the future of the Tamworth region, as identified in Council’s Blueprint 100 strategy. The introduction of a university campus to service Tamworth and surrounds will be of huge benefit to our residents by complementing existing tertiary education offerings, facilitating smart growth, creating a prosperous region and strengthening our proud identity. “We are proud to be involved in expanding on the educational options in the Tamworth region, and thank both the NSW Government and University of New England for their hard work and enthusiasm in bringing this project to fruition.”
