Major Road Upgrades

Tamworth Regional Council is committed to providing a safe and efficient transport network for communities across the region, and planned safety improvements for many of our major thoroughfares link back to Council’s Blueprint 100 future vision to create a well-connected, efficient and safe movement network for our region.

Stay up to date with these upgrades and learn more below. For information on road maintenance programs included grading of unsealed roads, maintenance of sealed roads, and major repairs please visit our Roads in the region page.

Duri-Dungowan Road

A popular route for heavy vehicles travelling between the New England Highway and Werris Creek Road, the unsealed 6.1km section of the road between the New England Highway and Gowrie Road currently deteriorates quickly and requires a high rate of regular maintenance. This section will soon be sealed, improving the safety, comfort and travel efficiency of the route for local residents. The project is expected to be completed by late 2023 and received funding of approximately $2.3 million from the NSW Government's Fixing Local Roads Program, and a contribution of $775,000 Tamworth Regional Council.

Kingstown Road

Residents of Retreat, Bendemeer and Watsons Creek can soon look forward to an easier, safer and more comfortable road travel, with the remaining unsealed portion of the road network on Kingstown Road between Retreat and the Tamworth Local Government Area boundary to be sealed. The 6.9km stretch of road is currently one of the most highly maintained roads in the Tamworth region. This project is currently in the design phase and has received funding of $2.8 million from the NSW Government's Fixing Local Roads Program and $736,152.62 from Tamworth Regional Council.

Watsons Creek Road

The drive between Bendemeer and the village of Watsons Creek is about to get smoother as 5.6km of Watsons Creek Road gets upgraded.

With the road being the only primary access from the village of Watsons Creek to Bendemeer and the New England Highway, sealing the road will provide a much more reliable pavement surface for local residents and improve travel times, safety and driver comfort.

The upgrades are expected to be completed by late 2023, and received $2.5 million in funding from the NSW Government's Fixing Local Roads program and $479,917 from Tamworth Regional Council.

Moonbi to Hallsville

Dangerous corners, culverts and intersections on local roads between Moonbi and Hallsville will be improved, including Davidsons Lane, Upper Moore Creek Road, and Moonbi Gap Road.

With the locations for the safety upgrade determined by a road safety audit and existing crash data, the upgrades will not only improve the safety of these roads for local residents, but the comfort and travel efficiency of these roads as well.

The works are expected to be completed in full by late-2023, with each identified site upgraded over a much shorter timeframe.

This project has received $2 million by the Australian Government’s Heavy Vehicle Safety Productivity Program, to be matched by an additional $2 million investment from Tamworth Regional Council.

Werris Creek Road

Werris Creek Road is the main route between Tamworth, Werris Creek and Quirindi and is a major freight route for our region.

Through $10 million in funding from the NSW Government, large sections of Werris Creek Road between Tamworth and the Liverpool Plains local government area boundary has now been upgraded and a wide centreline added to improve road safety. These improvements included line marking, signage, a new road surface and the installation of guardrail.

The upgrade of Werris Creek Road will allow local residents to enjoy a safer, smoother trip when travelling between Tamworth and Quirindi.
