Carthage Street Rehabilitation
Overview
With sustained heavy use over many years, Carthage Street has been identified for rehabilitation works to ensure acceptable performance levels as Tamworth continues to grow.
Works will take place over an approximate 18-month to two-year period and will see the rehabilitation of Carthage Street from Kitchener Street in the East to Bligh Street in the West.
Each section of the street may require different construction works, including pavement (road) renewal and may include kerb and gutter renewal, new line marking, replacement of damaged infrastructure impacting the pavement and driveway adjustments (any affected residents will be contacted beforehand).
This project aligns with Council’s Annual Plan and Budget 2023/2024 Focus Area 5: Connect Our Region and its Citizens.
Funding
These works will be funded through a combination of Council’s Water Reserve and Asset Renewal Reserve.

Yes. As different parts of the project commence, different sections of the road may be impacted by traffic control. Where possible, disruptions will be kept to a minimum, and the community kept up to date with upcoming works.
It is possible that some driveways will be impacted by these works. Affected residents will be contacted.
It is the restoration of the pavement (or road) structure to help extend its life. Deterioration of road surfaces may happen due to impacts such as traffic use over time, general weathering and water infiltration.
In these projects there some parts of the pavement will be resurfaced, whilst others may have certain surface layers removed and replaced.
These works will be funded through a combination of Council’s Water Reserve and the Asset Renewal Reserve.
Key outcomes for these works include:
- Increased lifespan of Carthage Street in alignment with projected region growth
- Enhanced safety for road users and pedestrians
- Removal and replacement (as required) of outdated and damaged infrastructure impacting the pavement
