Preliminary works are underway for the Tamworth Regional Skywalk - a visionary raised walkway amid the treetops of Victoria Park extending 1.5km from Endeavour Drive up to the Scenic Oxley Lookout. Tamworth Region Mayor Russell Webb said the Skywalk is expected to become the premier walking attraction of the New England North West. "It will be a unique recreational activity designed for people of all ages and abilities," he said.
"We have taken time through the design process to incorporate extensive accessibility considerations which will ensure the Skywalk is able to be used by a broad cross section of our community as well as become a drawcard for visitors."
The Skywalk is funded through a $14.3 million grant from the NSW Government under its Regional Tourism Activation Fund and $3.7 million from Council’s Regional Development Fund.
The Skywalk concept was first talked about in 2021 after the community identified the need for safer pedestrian links to the Lookout during extensive community consultation to create the Victoria Park Master Plan. Many walkers stride up Scenic Road to the Lookout daily, but sharing the roadway with vehicles is a safety risk.
Council has appointed Fleetwood Urban Pty Ltd as the design and construction contractor for the project following a competitive tender process. It will engage local businesses to work with its staff to deliver the project by mid-2026.
