In a continued effort to promote healthy living choices we launched the Better Oils program earlier this month, encouraging local food businesses to switch to a healthier oil option by June 30, 2025.
Aligning with two key Council objectives: improving health outcomes for all residents and raising awareness about healthy living, the program aims to reduce residents’ consumption of excessive saturated and trans fats when eating outside of home.
Health experts continue to highlight the crucial role that dietary fats and oils play in our heart health. High intake of saturated and trans fats is a major contributor to heart disease, as it raises cholesterol levels and can lead to blocked arteries.
In our ongoing efforts to promote heart health, we have already implemented smoke-free policies in the CBD and improved public spaces to encourage walking and physical activity. The Better Oils program will be another step forward in advocating for healthier choices and reducing heart disease risk in the region. The Heart Foundation also has some great info on heart health.
Participation is not mandatory, but local food businesses are encouraged to take part. If you’re interested, please email trc@tamworth.nsw.gov.au. Participating businesses that meet the program criteria will have a chance to win one of three free Primary Food Business Inspections for the 2025/26 financial year. Plus, they'll have the option to display a Better Oils sticker within their store.
